August Walker: How many times has Hunt’s government betrayed him, disavowed him, cast him aside? How long before a man like that has had enough? (Mission Impossible: Fallout)
Have you ever been talking to someone, and they say something along the lines of “you seem mad, are you mad?” to which you respond in a perfectly normal ton of voice “no not at all I’m totally fine!”
But do they ever believe you? NOPE, they know you better than you do and they somehow know that contrary to what you say, feel and believe…you are mad. And so that person asks you over and over again. The guess what happens! You get mad AT THAT PERSON because holy shit they will not drop the topic of you being mad no matter what you say. This is my biggest pet peeve and used to happen to me all the time, because apparently everyone around me knew that I was mad, even though I was most definitely not.
At what point do we lose our minds and just start punching people? There is always that breaking point where we become that which we are accused of being. This brings me to my next question…when will Ethan Hunt go rogue and betray his country?

Ethan Hunt, the number one agent of the Impossible Mission Force (IMF), the man who always chooses to accept his mission, and the man who always gets the bad guy and saves the world without praise. In every single Mission Impossible movie Hunt must stop the shenanigans of a bad man who has A) stolen a deadly virus. 2) Obtained nuclear weapons or …. D) obtained nuclear weapons. The only thing is, even though Ethan has a 100% track record at completing missions deemed impossible by his superiors, and has put his life on the line for his country at least 6 times that I know of, he is constantly accused BY HIS OWN ORGANIZATION of going rogue.
Let us go on a journey through the past 20 years.
Mission Impossible (1996): Ethan is framed for the murder of his entire team and must go on the run to clear his name… but he eventually captures the bad guy. Alright sure, every once in a while I get blamed for shit I didn’t do. We’ve all been there, but we clear our name and move on with our lives. Accuse me once, shame on you.
Mission Impossible 2 (2000): Nothing out of the ordinary, Ethan just stops bad guys from releasing a deadly airborne virus that could kill the world. Normal day at the office. Although the bad guy does kill someone important while wearing Ethan’s face, but Ethan’s like “I have an alibi, I ain’t u-g-l-y.”
Mission Impossible 3 (2006): Ethan plans a mission to capture the bad guy without official approval, Ethan and his team are captured by the IMF but escape headquarters, and are thus declared “enemy of the state”….then Ethan captures the bad guy. That’s fair he basically said YOLO and did whatever he wanted but come on its Ethan Hunt he already saved the world twice let’s give the guy some leeway here. Accuse me twice me twice, shame on me.
Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol (2011): After an unknown person orders a bombing using IMF radio chat everyone loses their minds and disbands the IMF. Then Ethan and his team have to figure out who did it and stop a missile by themselves…they do. Welcome to the technological age people, shit is easy to hack and shit is easy to mess with! Accuse me three times, alright I’m starting to lose it a little bit.
Mission Impossible Rogue Nation (2015): The IM F is disbanded AGAIN and Ethan goes out solo to accomplish his mission AGAIN. Ethan changes his legal name to Carmen San Diego so the IMF can’t trace where he goes, gets blamed for a car bomb (not the Irish kind) and then goes on to capture the bad guy and clear his name. Accuse me four times, fuck me, right?
Alright so at some point if your, let’s say, a high-ranking US government official. Wouldn’t you think to yourself “Man this Ethan Hunt guy is fucking legit, he literally ALWAYS gets the bad guy, ALWAYS saves the day, and ALWAYS does it for his country (or the vine). I highly doubt this dude will ever turn his back on his country.

Mission Impossible Fallout (2018): The bad guy gives the CIA a phone framing Ethan for a bunch of bad stuff. The CIA believes it for some reason and try to bring Ethan in, but they can’t and he stops the bad guy thus clearing his name. So to reiterate the CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY gets a phone that connects Ethan to doing bad things and they just run with it. No investigation. That’s like they find a diary detailing horrible horrible atrocities on the front cover it says “Diary of Ethan Hunt” in someone else’s handwriting. The CIA looks at the camera and goes “OHMYGOD he’s been bad the whole time….” No guys…..just no…. Fool me five times, THATS IT, I’M GOING ROGUE!

Now don’t you worry Bad Robot Studios I’ve already written the next Mission Impossible movie for you. It’s titled: Mission Impossible – Hunt. It starts with Ethan alone in his bedroom, he’s reminiscing about old missions “I’m not rogue, I’m not rogue” he repeats to himself over and over. But he has been betrayed enough by this country. Ethan sends a video message to the IMF and goes “sup fuckers! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to stop me if you can.” (Probably not in those words but you get the point). I also would accept “your mission. should you choose to accept it, is deez nuts”. Over the course of 2 hours his old team tries to stop him in any and every way possible but they can’t. Ethan successfully detonates a bomb (or maybe like assassinates a world leader) somewhere in the world. The IMF is shaken, morale is shattered and nobody knows what to do.
Flash forward to a few days later….
Ethan’s old team is sitting around an outdoor table at a restaurant in Italy (why Italy? because that’s how I wrote it), they receive a FaceTime from Ethan. All you can see is his face, the background behind him is black and undistinguishable, Ethan talks to his team about why he has gone rogue and about how even though he served his country faithfully for twenty plus years, they turned on him and doubted him chance they could. He offers his team one final mission, join him and shape the world from the shadows in the way they see fit. This mission they choose to deny. Ethan looks downtrodden but accepts their choice. He turns around revealing where he is, in the background you can see the team from an elevated angle. Ethan has been watching them the whole time from a second story room across the street. The team rushes upstairs to the room he was in, they look out the window to see him standing at their table. As they stare at one another, two people cross in front of him and he’s gone. [Fade to black]

Also you ever realize that nobody ever talks about Ethan’s brother Mike Hunt?
